Sound Healing

Despite its rising popularity, sound healing is hardly a new form of therapy. In fact, sound has been used in various cultures for thousands of years as a tool for healing. Whether through the practice of mantras as with the Hindis, the Icaros (medicine melodies) of various Indigenous peoples from Central and South America, or Pythagoras’ use of interval and frequency, these various techniques all have the same intention: to move us from a place of imbalance to a place of balance. Sound therapies help us achieve greater mind/body/spirit integration — elevating mood, boosting productivity, and healing our bodies.

Humans have a natural instinct for sound therapy. Just think about how a favorite song can lift your mood. According to renowned Crystal Bowl and Gong Master Malbert Lee, “To heal is to make sound. Sound can shift frequencies from low energy of guilt and fear to higher vibrations of love and joy. Sound healing is the use of sacred instruments or voice to release energetic blockages inducing a state of ease and harmony in the body.” While there are many types of sound therapy, all of them produce vibrations that alter, or entrain, your brain waves.

Sound healing incorporates a combination of tuning forks, crystal and Tibetan bowls, bells, drums, voice and other instruments to facilitate positive, healing shifts in our brainwave state by using entrainment. Designed to synchronize fluctuating brainwaves to a coherent state,  entrainment offers a stable frequency to help the brain/body to attune to its own healing potential. Thus, sound practitioners do not “do” the healing, the client does.

With stable healing rhythm and frequency, it then becomes possible to down-shift our normal beta state (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness), and even reach theta (meditative state) and delta (sleep; where internal healing can occur). In other words, Sound Healing synchronizes brain waves to achieve profound states of relaxation and restore the normal vibratory frequencies of the cells in our bodies.
